CHAPTER 8

Loud banging on the door wakes Casey from a deep slumber around seven thirty on Tuesday morning. Throwing her robe on over her shorty pajamas, she hurries down the stairs in bare feet. Swinging open the door, she’s surprised to find Sheldon on the front porch holding two coffees.

Sheldon’s jaw drops when he sees her. “Wow! Your hair looks like mine in the morning.”

“What’re you doing here?” she asks, gathering her messy waves into a ponytail and securing it with an elastic from her wrist.

“I was worried about you. I wanted to catch you before you went to work.”

“I’m not going in today. I’m not even sure I still have a job.”

He narrows his eyes. “Ollie hasn’t contacted you?”

“Not unless she texted during the night.” Casey gestures at the stairs. “My phone’s in my room.”

Sheldon hands her a coffee. “Cream only, the way you like it.”

“Thanks,” she says, and takes a tentative sip.

“Can we talk for a minute?”

“I guess.” She ties her robe tighter and follows him across the porch to the bench swing.

“I’m sorry for the way everything went down yesterday,” Sheldon says. “When I heard the rumor, I called Ollie to find out if she knew anything. I didn’t mean to set her off.”

“I thought we were friends, Sheldon. Why didn’t you come to me instead of reaching out to Ollie?”

“Because I, too, thought we were friends. And I felt betrayed. Why didn’t you tell me the truth?”

“I came to Lovely with the sole purpose of finding my biological father. But I wasn’t sure how to approach him. When Ollie offered me a job, I put meeting him on the back burner while I settled into my life. Then I ran into him at the grand opening. He recognized the resemblance. When he asked my name, I confessed that my mother was Beverly Hobbs. He put two and two together. I didn’t mean for anyone to get hurt. Most especially you. My mother kept him from me all these years because she didn’t want to disrupt your family. And that’s exactly what’s happened. I should never have come here.”

“Despite what anyone else thinks, I’m glad you’re here.” He rests an arm on the swing behind her. “I can’t believe you’re my little sister. I knew something was different about you. I felt a connection with you, but I wasn’t attracted to you. Which is weird because you’re so damn beautiful.” He chuckles. “That’s an arrogant thing to say, considering you’re a female version of me.”

Casey touches a finger to his cleft chin. “It’s uncanny, isn’t it? Like one of those apps where you switch faces with another person. You’re the spitting image of your dad.”

“He’s our dad, Casey.”

“That will take some getting used to.” She lowers her hand. “I feel awful. I didn’t mean to cause so much trouble for Daniel.”

Sheldon barks out a laugh. “Trouble? You started World War Three. We’ve always been a divided family. Until now, it’s been my siblings versus Dad and me. Now we have you to even the playing field.
