CHAPTER 8
Loud banging on the door wakes Casey from a deep slumber around seven thirty on Tuesday morning. Throwing her robe on over her shorty pajamas, she hurries down the stairs in bare feet. Swinging open the door, sheâs surprised to find Sheldon on the front porch holding two coffees.
Sheldonâs jaw drops when he sees her. âWow! Your hair looks like mine in the morning.â
âWhatâre you doing here?â she asks, gathering her messy waves into a ponytail and securing it with an elastic from her wrist.
âI was worried about you. I wanted to catch you before you went to work.â
âIâm not going in today. Iâm not even sure I still have a job.â
He narrows his eyes. âOllie hasnât contacted you?â
âNot unless she texted during the night.â Casey gestures at the stairs. âMy phoneâs in my room.â
Sheldon hands her a coffee. âCream only, the way you like it.â
âThanks,â she says, and takes a tentative sip.
âCan we talk for a minute?â
âI guess.â She ties her robe tighter and follows him across the porch to the bench swing.
âIâm sorry for the way everything went down yesterday,â Sheldon says. âWhen I heard the rumor, I called Ollie to find out if she knew anything. I didnât mean to set her off.â
âI thought we were friends, Sheldon. Why didnât you come to me instead of reaching out to Ollie?â
âBecause I, too, thought we were friends. And I felt betrayed. Why didnât you tell me the truth?â
âI came to Lovely with the sole purpose of finding my biological father. But I wasnât sure how to approach him. When Ollie offered me a job, I put meeting him on the back burner while I settled into my life. Then I ran into him at the grand opening. He recognized the resemblance. When he asked my name, I confessed that my mother was Beverly Hobbs. He put two and two together. I didnât mean for anyone to get hurt. Most especially you. My mother kept him from me all these years because she didnât want to disrupt your family. And thatâs exactly whatâs happened. I should never have come here.â
âDespite what anyone else thinks, Iâm glad youâre here.â He rests an arm on the swing behind her. âI canât believe youâre my little sister. I knew something was different about you. I felt a connection with you, but I wasnât attracted to you. Which is weird because youâre so damn beautiful.â He chuckles. âThatâs an arrogant thing to say, considering youâre a female version of me.â
Casey touches a finger to his cleft chin. âItâs uncanny, isnât it? Like one of those apps where you switch faces with another person. Youâre the spitting image of your dad.â
âHeâs our dad, Casey.â
âThat will take some getting used to.â She lowers her hand. âI feel awful. I didnât mean to cause so much trouble for Daniel.â
Sheldon barks out a laugh. âTrouble? You started World War Three. Weâve always been a divided family. Until now, itâs been my siblings versus Dad and me. Now we have you to even the playing field.
